Ornella Barra: Before Alliance Boots

Like many successful entrepreneurs, Ornella Barra has faced a point in life where she could quite comfortably retire. Ornella built up her own pharmaceutical distribution business in her native Italy, and made such a success of it that she was able to sell the company to a rival firm, Alleanza Salute Italia (ASI), in 1986.
But like many true entrepreneurs, business is in Ornellas blood and she did not walk away. Instead, she stayed on at Alleanza Salute Italia, working as the companys managing director.
It was here at ASI that Ornella first met with Stefano Pessina, the man who would later play an instrumental role in the 2006 merger of the two pharmaceutical giants, Alliance UniChem and Boots Group. With Pessina running the company, Ornella made a name for herself as the MD of ASI. Together with Pessina, Ornella aided ASI as the company bought up many pharmaceutical companies across Europe, creating a truly pan-European distribution company.
Ten years after Ornella joined ASI, and under her leadership, the company had grown its turnover to 3.1 billion per annum. In the years of further growth and expansion which followed, ASI first became Alliance Sant, then merged with the Groups British arm UniChem in 1997, to create the new combined company Alliance UniChem.
At this new company, Ornella Barra was in charge of the Groups operations across the south of Europe.
